Born in New Delhi, India, 1971, Soumyajit received his initial art education from Delhi College of Fine Arts, from where he graduated in 1994. After working for a couple of years as a freelance artist with exhibition and interior designers, he went on to the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, to study art direction.
While the art college trained him in all the skills and techniques, it was really the film school where he started forming his views on art. It was there that he learnt to look at art more as a way of life rather than just something to do with paints and brushes.
After the film school, he took a long sabbatical from painting and explored other non-conventional mediums of creativity like paper-lamps and jewellery. His paintings today display a playful amalgamation of the diverse techniques, ideas and knowledge of different materials that he acquired during that phase of his life.
Technically he likes to describe himself as a 'Material artist' who likes to experiment with conventional and non-conventional materials in very unconventional ways.
He presently lives and works Abu Dhabi. He also teaches art at The Cambridge High School, Abu Dhabi, where he is Head of faculty for art .
His art works are in the collection of various private collectors in India, Bangladesh and UAE.
